Hormonal Imbalances

1. Hypothyroidism / Hyperthyroidism

Hypothyroidism refers to an underactive thyroid gland, leading to symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, and depression. In contrast, Hyperthyroidism is characterized by an overactive thyroid gland, causing weight loss, anxiety, and irritability. Modern treatment for Hypothyroidism involves thyroid hormone replacement therapy, while Hyperthyroidism is treated with medications to suppress thyroid function, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgery in severe cases.

Ayurvedic View:

In Ayurveda, thyroid imbalances are related to the dysfunction of the Agni (digestive fire) and the imbalance of the Kapha and Pitta doshas. Hypothyroidism is primarily associated with Kapha imbalance, leading to sluggish metabolism, while Hyperthyroidism is linked to Pitta imbalance, causing excessive heat and activity in the body. Ayurvedic treatments include herbal remedies such as Kanchanar Guggulu for balancing thyroid function, along with detoxification therapies like Virechana (purgation) and Nasya (nasal administration of herbs). Diet and lifestyle changes that enhance the digestive fire and balance the doshas are also emphasized.

2. Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal Fatigue is a condition associated with prolonged stress, where the adrenal glands fail to produce adequate levels of cortisol and other hormones, leading to symptoms like chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, low blood pressure, and mood changes. Modern medicine often addresses adrenal fatigue through stress management techniques, dietary changes, and sometimes hormone replacement therapy.

Ayurvedic View:

In Ayurveda, Adrenal Fatigue is seen as a result of long-term Vata and Pitta imbalances caused by excessive stress and overexertion. The depletion of Ojas (vital energy) leads to physical and mental exhaustion. Ayurvedic treatments aim to rejuvenate and restore the adrenal glands using adaptogenic herbs like Ashwagandha and Brahmi, which support the body’s ability to manage stress. Panchakarma therapies such as Abhyanga (oil massage) and Shirodhara (pouring medicated oil over the forehead) help calm the nervous system and promote relaxation. Dietary and lifestyle modifications that nourish the body and reduce stress are also emphasized.

VIAMS’s Integrated Treatment Protocol:

Our approach at VIAMS integrates modern stress management techniques with Ayurvedic therapies to treat Adrenal Fatigue holistically. We offer personalized herbal treatments to rejuvenate the adrenal glands, Panchakarma therapies to restore balance, and Yoga and Pranayama to reduce stress and improve energy levels.
