Breast Health
1. Mastitis
Mastitis is the inflammation of breast tissue, commonly occurring during breastfeeding due to blocked milk ducts or infection. Symptoms include pain, swelling, redness, and sometimes fever. Modern treatment typically involves antibiotics if an infection is present, along with recommendations for proper breastfeeding techniques to avoid further complications. Pain relief may be managed with over-the-counter painkillers, and continued breastfeeding or pumping is encouraged to clear the blockage.
Ayurvedic View:
In Ayurveda, Mastitis is linked to an imbalance in the Pitta dosha, which causes inflammation and infection. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on reducing Pitta and inflammation using cooling herbs like Manjistha, Turmeric, and Neem, which have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. External applications such as herbal poultices and oil massages can soothe the inflammation, while internal treatments support healing and detoxification. Panchakarma therapies like Virechana (purgation) can also be employed to cleanse the body and promote recovery.
VIAMS’s Integrated Treatment Protocol:
At VIAMS, we adopt an integrated approach to managing Mastitis. Our protocol includes Ayurvedic treatments to reduce inflammation and prevent infection, such as herbal remedies and topical applications. We combine this with modern medical support, ensuring proper breastfeeding techniques are maintained. Personalized dietary advice and stress management techniques, including Yoga and Pranayama, further support the body’s healing process.
2. Fibrocystic Breast Changes
Fibrocystic breast changes involve the development of lumpy or rope-like tissue in the breasts, often fluctuating with the menstrual cycle. It is a common benign condition in menstruating women, though it can cause discomfort, tenderness, and swelling. Modern treatment usually involves monitoring symptoms, lifestyle modifications, pain relief through over-the-counter medications, and sometimes hormonal treatments to regulate symptoms. Regular breast exams and imaging may be advised to rule out more serious conditions.
Ayurvedic View:
Ayurveda considers fibrocystic breast changes to be caused by imbalances in the Kapha and Vata doshas, leading to the accumulation of fluids and improper tissue formation. Ayurvedic treatments focus on detoxifying the body and balancing the doshas using herbal formulations like Kanchanar Guggulu, known for its ability to dissolve cysts and improve lymphatic drainage. Panchakarma therapies such as Abhyanga (oil massage) and Basti (medicated enema) help reduce fluid retention and promote circulation. Ayurvedic dietary guidelines emphasize foods that reduce Kapha and support hormonal balance.
