Psychology

Ayurvedic psychology is a holistic approach to understanding the mind, emotions, and behavior based on the ancient science of Ayurveda. It is based on Ayurvedic principles, which hold that mental and physical health are just as important as physical health.

Foundations of Ayurvedic Psychology

Tridoshas and the Mind

Ayurveda explains that the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—not only govern physical health but also influence mental and emotional well-being. Each dosha affects the mind in unique ways:

  • Vata: Associated with creativity, quick thinking, and flexibility but also with anxiety and restlessness.
  • Pitta: Linked to intelligence, focus, and determination, but can lead to anger and irritability when imbalanced.
  • Kapha: Promotes calmness, stability, and loyalty, but may result in lethargy and attachment if excessive.

Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas

These are the three gunas (qualities) that describe the state of mind:

  • Sattva: Represents clarity, wisdom, and harmony. A sattvic mind is peaceful and balanced.
  • Rajas: Signifies activity, passion, and restlessness. A rajasic mind can be energetic but also prone to stress.
  • Tamas: Denotes darkness, inertia, and ignorance. A tamasic mind may experience confusion and depression.

Prakriti and Vikriti

Prakriti is the innate constitution of an individual, including mental and emotional tendencies. Vikriti refers to the current state of imbalance. Understanding these helps in tailoring personalized mental health strategies.

Mind-Body Connection

Ayurvedic Psychology emphasizes the inseparability of the mind and body. Mental imbalances can manifest as physical symptoms and vice versa. Therefore, treatment often involves both mental and physical therapies.
