Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing

1. Anxiety and Depression

Women are more susceptible to anxiety and depression due to hormonal fluctuations during various life stages such as menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. Modern treatment for anxiety and depression often includes psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), antidepressants, or anti-anxiety medications. Lifestyle modifications, regular exercise, and mindfulness practices are also recommended to manage symptoms and promote mental well-being.

Ayurvedic Aspect:

In Ayurveda, mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression are attributed to imbalances in the Vata and Pitta doshas. Vata imbalance causes restlessness, fear, and anxiety, while aggravated Pitta can lead to anger, irritability, and depressive symptoms. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on balancing these doshas with herbal remedies like Ashwagandha and Brahmi to calm the mind, improve resilience, and promote emotional stability. Panchakarma therapies such as Shirodhara (pouring warm oil over the forehead) and Abhyanga (oil massage) are used to soothe the nervous system and improve mental clarity. Dietary and lifestyle adjustments are emphasized to support long-term emotional balance.

2. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that affects women emotionally and physically, causing symptoms such as severe mood swings, irritability, fatigue, and depression. These symptoms often interfere with daily life and relationships. Modern treatment options include antidepressants, hormonal therapies, and lifestyle modifications such as exercise, healthy eating, and stress reduction. Cognitive therapy and support groups can also be beneficial.

Ayurvedic Aspect:

Ayurveda views PMDD as an imbalance in the Vata and Pitta doshas, influenced by hormonal fluctuations. The buildup of Ama (toxins) in the body is also considered a contributing factor. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on detoxification and balancing the doshas. Herbal formulations such as Ashoka, Shatavari, and Brahmi are recommended to support hormonal balance and reduce emotional distress. Panchakarma therapies, including Virechana (purgation) and Nasya (nasal therapy), help cleanse the system and restore harmony. Ayurveda also emphasizes the importance of a calming routine, meditation, and a nourishing diet to ease PMDD symptoms.
